  1. You should probably still go, because most of the outbreaks are near east Mexico (near Gulf of Mexico) and around there, not so much California area. It’s not likely to get it anyways.

  2. I think you should take the trip to San Diego. You may not come into contact with any people who have been exposed to the Swine flu. You’re more likely to catch a cold than the Swine flu. Your best bet is staying in San Diego and on Catalina Island. Don’t go into Tijuana at all. None of the cases of the Swine flu have caused any deaths in the U.S. Most people who’ve caught the Swine flu have had similar symptoms to most other types of flu. I wouldn’t be that panicked about it. You can go to the doctor and be treated if you come down with it, but I seriously doubt that will happen. Make sure to wash your hands often and if you think someone may have the disease, you can wear a mask. All the places you’re traveling to are wonderful to visit, and you don’t want to miss out on all the wonderful experiences.

By the way, if you get the chance, take an inland island tour on Catalina Island. You’ll get to see free-roaming buffalo. I got some pictures of the buffalo close-up. You can’t get that kind of experience in a zoo.

  3. there have been cases in california, as well as texas and a few others, but i have been doing a lot of reshearch and it seems like this swine flu is just a flu. we are making a big deal about it because the people in mexico and other countries with poor health care are dying because they do not get the health care they need. it is safe to come to san diego, just be cautious. wash your hands often, do not touch your face, stuff like that. you CAN be treated for this flu

  4. This is all hype. This flu is no more dangerous then any other. The need to feed the 24 hour news cycle has made people insane.

  5. I concur with Joe. The swine flu is not the big killer disease that the media is making it out to be. Sure, some people died in Mexico, in a very poor area (Oaxaca). The first person who died in early April got sick and didn’t do anything about it, except take antibiotics (which are useless against flu viruses, and that can actually reduce your immune response to disease). She didn’t go to the doctor, either. So, she died about 10 days later.

Some 250+ people have died from this flu so far, almost all of them in Mexico. The one death in the US was a 3 year old Mexican boy whose parents brought him into Texas to get care, because it wasn’t available in their small town in Mexico. And, over 100 people in the US die from the regular flu each year, with over 35,000 dying world-wide from the flu each year.

The media have also latched onto the word “pandemic,” which just means an epidemic that is spreading across the world. But, that just means that it’s not spreading in just one country or region. Still, you can’t write the word “pandemic” without the “panic.” And, it’s the perfect sensationalism that today’s irresponsible media thrives on.

San Diego is perfectly safe. Your cruise ship will be perfectly safe. Go have fun in Catalina and Vancouver, and don’t worry about the swine flu. Take standard precautions against any kind of flu (avoid people who have symptoms, wash your hands often, if your hands are dirty avoid touching your face, etc.) and you’ll be just fine.
